Originally from England and now residing in Los Angeles, Chris Standring is an excellent jazz guitarist, composer, and educator. In "Stepping Outside" Chris sheds some valuable light on how to effectively use chromatic side-slipping in jazz improvisation.

 

About the Artist...

Chris Standring was trained classically at the London College of Music. With ten years experience as a freelance session player in London, Chris headed for Los Angeles to put his artist career on the international map. He quickly integrated himself among the elite Hollywood music community enjoying success as a sideman both live and in the studio. Since his arrival in California he has recorded with Bebe & Cece Winans, Jodey Watley, Omar, The Solsonics, Carol Bayer Sager and Rick Braun. He has performed live with Marc Antoine, Rick Braun, Patti Austin, Bob James, Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Boney James, Siedah Garrett, Peter White, Kirk Whalum and Al Stewart. In May 1996 Sonic Images records released his own acid jazz recording project "solarsystem."

In February 1996 Chris took part in the "Guitars Saxes & More" US tour featuring Marc Antoine, Peter White, Kirk Whalum and Rick Braun. He then became part of Rick Braun's touring band for a year and a half and was featured as a writer and player on his top selling album "Body & Soul."

Instinct Records signed Chris to an exclusive artist deal in December of 1997. His first release entitled Velvet, co-produced by solarsystem partner Rodney Lee, reached #9 on the Gavin & R&R radio charts peaking July 1998. Saxophone star Kirk Whalum guests on the record along with trumpeter Rick Braun. Cool Shades the radio single from Velvet went top 10 for over 3 months on the Gavin/R&R charts and stayed on the top 30 chart for 25 weeks! Chris' music has appeared on 10 compilation Cd's since his initial 1997 signing. Chris toured with sax man Richard Elliot's group for most of 1999 as a sideman to promote his #1 hit album "Chill Factor."

And now...

Chris' recent album "Hip Sway" was officially pronounced a hit, reaching #2 on the Radio & Records national NAC chart and features guests Richard Elliot, Rodney Lee, Dino Soldo and Tony Guererro.

 

 

Educator & Author...

Chris Standring is the author of several books on the market, including his popular new method, "Play What You Hear" - a unique, complete home study course for the improvising jazz guitarist. For details and ordering information click here or on the graphic below.

 

International Music Publications (UK) published two books of Standring classical guitar arrangements entitled "The Jazz Collection" and "The Favorite Collection." Hal Leonard published a book entitled "The Essential Studio Guitarist," a popular book worldwide, now on the required reading list at USC music dept.
